Among the many enchanting islands of Greece stands a pearl lit by the sun 365 days a year which was a crossroads of ships and merchants, but especially to the homeland of the Colossus, one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world.
We are in Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese islands, which also includes Simi, Piscopi, Calchi, Astypalea, Kalimnos, Karpathos, Kassos, Kastellorizo, Leros, Nisyros, Patmos, Symi and Tilos. The island, which takes its name from the main town, Rhodes, is very rich in historical, architectural and natural wonders, all surrounded by an enchanting sea.
Start your visit from the historic city center, now Unesco World Heritage Site, it is proudly enclosed within mighty walls and represents an extraordinary fusion of different architectural styles: classical, medieval, Ottoman and Italian. Visit the Cavalieri District, the Solimano the Magnificent mosque and the acropolis of the old city in the city center.
Then move into the small but charming village of Lindos, this quaint Greek village is a cascade of white houses, once home of fishermen and captain and explore this tangle of streets without a destination. Founded more than 4000 years ago, this village still retains evidence of the dominations of Byzantines, Franks and Turks, but the great tourist attraction of the center of Lindos are its lively bars and its delicious typical tavernas. you can admire also (perched on a hill 116 meters above the sea) the acropolis, but reaching it can be quite tiring due to the steep climb, but once you get to the top, the beauty of the place is to take your breath away. Founded in the 6th century AD, the acropolis of Lindos still preserves the remains of the temple of Athena and Linda and a portico with 20 columns. One of the attractions that make this island unique is certainly the so-called Valley of Butterflies of Petaloùdes, a magical place! In fact, thanks to the particular climatic conditions and humidity, during the summer period, some butterfly species concentrates on the branches and the waters of the valley, giving to those who visit the place a unique and unparalleled spectacle.
But the island of Rhodes is also beaches and lots and lots of sea. The best known is, what is today called Antony Quenn Beach, it is on this beach that the actor turned the most famous scenes of the movie “The cannons of Navarone”. You can not miss it!
Another noteworthy beach is Faliraki, popular tourist destination along the west coast of the island, is a long stretch of golden sand bathed by an incredibly clean sea. Also in the evening it livens up with life, so it’s perfect if you want to be late and get unleashed.
Only in an island like this you can meet a beach with two seas: it is that of Prassonissi is a tongue of sand that divides the Aegean sea to the north from the Mediterranean Sea to the south creating two distinct bays. In the months of July and August the wind blows vigorously in these parts, making Prassonissi the ideal destination for water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing and for the most breathtaking photographs.
The beach of Kalithea is a small jewel, set in a bay surrounded by green pine trees of sand and rocks, it retains an evocative natural appearance thanks also to the transparent sea of a beautiful color between the emerald and the blue. Made famous by a sumptuous spa complex built by Italians in the first half of the twentieth century, it is one of the most popular beaches on the island. It can also be reached by sea from Rhodes.
If you are looking for a more secluded place away from mass tourism, not far from the village of Monolithos is the little known beach of Glyfada, this a pebble beach surrounded by pine forests, which offer suggestive green reflections to the transparent water of the sea, this is almost always uncrowded and is a perfect oasis of peace for those who want to sunbathe undisturbed.
Try to understand where the colossus was located, it is said that it was in front of the port, to be clearly visible from the ships that were passing and getting inside the harbor, this could be used as a spot for greeting the people that were arriving, using magic touch that characterize this enchanted island.
